Richard F. Heck, the Willis F. Harrington Professor Emeritus in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry at the University of Delaware, received the Nobel.

in 1954 at UCLA, working with Saul Winstein. He undertook post-doctoral studies at the ETH in Zurich, Switzerland, then returned briefly to UCLA undertake further studies. In 1957 he moved to Wilmington, DE to take a position at Hercules Co, where he began his work studying the reactions of organic molecules with transition metals (known as transition metal organometallic chemistry).

In 1971, Heck moved to the University of Delaware to take a faculty position in the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry and to continue his studies in organometallic chemistry.
